Tales of the Riverside

23 March 2023
A party of Candlewick Ward Club members and guests, 21 in all, joined this event, starting out from Blackfriars Bridge on a pleasant morning for a walk along the footpath running along the north bank of the Thames from Blackfriars towards Tower Bridge.
Our qualified City of London guide, Robert, who is also a ‘Candlewickian’, gave the group a fascinating introduction to the history of life working and living near the Thames from Roman times to the present day before leading us on our walk along the Thames. As part of a most interesting and informative tour, we stopped at several points along our riverside journey to hear stories of events which had taken place at various sites. These included the mysterious death of the Italian Banker, Roberto Calvi, underneath the arches of Blackfriars Bridge in 1982, as well as the drama of the ‘wobbly’ Millennium Bridge which had to close for two years after its opening due to a tendency to sway when people walked across it!
Despite a change in the weather with something of a downpour during the later stages of the walk, our members and guests much enjoyed the event and were thoroughly absorbed by the tales and explanations expounded by our guide Although somewhat drenched by the end of the walk, we finished our trip with a well-deserved visit to the ‘The Hung Drawn & Quartered’ Pub for lunch and time to dry out! Many thanks indeed to our guide Robert for a most interesting and entertaining trip and also to those involved in arranging the event.
